What is CBD?
CBD is short is short for “ cannabidiol” (and certainly easier to remember and pronounce). Cannabidiol is just one of over 100 cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis sativa plant. And the cannabis sativa plant is not the only place where you can find cannabinoids, why your own body makes its own cannibinoids endogenously. These endocannabinoids are part of the endocannabinoid system that aid the body with sleep, appetite, mood, temperature regulation, pain sensation management and immune system regulation among other things.
But wait, if CBD is found in the cannabis sativa plant, doesn’t it mean it will make me “high”?
Nope. You could think of the cannabis sativa plant family being divided into two groups.
The first group would contain the plants people refer to as marijuana plants. These plants do contain CBD and are used by medical marijuana patients to help with a wide variety of ailments. But marijuana plants also contain a cannabinoid called THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, and this is the chemical that makes people feel high. Oma’s Organics does not use CBD or anything else from the Marijuana plant.
The second group of cannabis sativa plants is referred to as hemp. Hemp varieties contain high amounts of CBD but have almost no THC and are quite useless to someone looking to smoke them to “get high”. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both grew massive amounts of hemp on their plantations. Hemp used to be a very important agricultural product in the United States. It was used for rope and cloth production as well as hemp oil with cotton being its chief competitor. Cotton was very labor intensive but gained the competitive advantage by the huge expansion in the number of slaves imported to the United States and also with the invention of the cotton gin. Hemp eventually fell out of favor for political reasons due to its association with the marijuana plant.
Oma’s Organics uses only hemp derived CBD of the highest quality to provide the clinically proven benefits of medical marijuana but without the THC and resulting “high”.
